How to make your own stain-removing laundry detergent using baking soda

Looking for less chemical solutions for your laundry?
Making your own laundry detergent is easy, inexpensive and effective. Not to mention that it is easier on your skin.

Here’s how to make your own stain-removing laundry detergent at home:

  • 1 cup of washing soda
  • 1 cup of borax
  • 1 bar of shaved bar soap

To make it smell good you can put in essential oils, such as lavender or rose or whichever aroma you fancy.

To put together the mix just stir everything together for a few minutes. You can use a blender or any kind of food processor you own to make it smooth and to easily dissolve in the washing cycle, avoiding any residues.

How to use it?

Just use one table spoon per load. Or if the laundry is very dirty, you can use 2 or 3 table spoons.

Here’s how to make your very own fabric softener to complete the laundry process:

  • 1 gallon of white vinegar
  • 30 or 40 drops of essential oil of your choice, for example: lemon, lavender, orange or peppermint

Shake well before use and how you use it is like this: for small loads, half a cup to the rinsing cycle, or  whole cup for large loads.

For your homemade laundry detergent you can use soap made from coconut oil, tallow, or lard.

Opinions are split when it comes to adding borax to the laundry detergent. But, if you wish, just use baking soda, and leave out the  borax.

Another tip to make your laundry nice and puffy, is to use hair conditioner in your softener mix:

  • 5 cups hot water
  • 3 cups vinegar
  • 1 cup hair conditioner

Mix the conditioner and the water together in a bowl until the conditioner is completely dissolved in the water. Use hot water to ensure a smooth composition. Add the vinegar and store the liquid in an empty glass bottle.
