Gold jewelry, although beautiful, are hard to maintain. Gold discolors quickly, spots and different deposits may appear, and luster disappears. Any jewelry can be cleaned by a specialist, but we can learn to do this ourselves, if we know what solutions to use.
Simple solutions to clean blackened gold
Gold items should be cleaned with a special solution. Here’s how to proceed: dissolve a little soap in warm water (even hot), then soak the jewelry for 15-20 minutes and finally clean it with a sponge or a toothbrush, then rinse under running water.
While you rinse well, look to see if there is any dirt left between the striations of the jewelry. Rub once again every gem, if needed, then buff it with a soft, lint-free cloth.
We can also use laundry detergent or dishwashing detergent instead of soap. If gold was pretty bad blackened from skin contact, after being washed in the solution described above, the jewelry should be cleaned with a soft suede.
When you remove the layers of dirt by rubbing, make sure you use a very gentle toothbrush. When you buy a toothbrush, look at the label that will tell you if it has soft or hard fibers. There’s no need to buy an expensive toothbrush to clean your jewelry. Brush the jewelry using circular movements.
Solutions for the jewelry that have gemstones
If gold jewelry has precious stones, then we must use a special solution, made with salt and sodium bicarbonate. How to prepare it? Add in a bowl: half a liter of hot water, 120 grams of sodium bicarbonate and 30 grams of table salt. After being soaked in this solution, the jewelry should be rinsed with cold water and left to dry on a piece of cotton. Another solution to clean the gold items is to wipe with a soft cloth moistened with alcohol.
