In time, white pillows tend to get yellow, usually due to night sweats. Especially if you use anatomic pillows, which people tend not to put covers on.
How to get out the yellow stains? And, more important, how to kill germs and bacteria on and inside the pillows?
You can soak the pillows in hot water in which you add lemon slices and a little bit of baking soda and then wash as usual on your longest washing cycle. You can also add a little bit of baking soda in with the laundry detergent of your choice.
Here’s a recipe for a cleaner that will help you get out the yellow off your white pillows:
- HOT water
- 1 cup of laundry detergent (bought, or you can make you own)
- 1 cup powdered dishwasher detergent
- 1 cup of bleach (bought, or you can make your own natural bleach)
- 1/2 cup borax
USEFUL TIP: Check the label before using any cleaning method. For example, although HOT water is recommended, some materials cannot handle it. Or, bleach may not be recommended on the label, and in this case you can make your own using lemon juice and baking soda.
You can also scrub the yellow stain with baking soda and vinegar. Just mix the two until you get a soft, smooth paste. And afterwards, just wash as usual.
USEFUL INFO: Vinegar is a wonderful disinfectant and deodorizer. It can be used in various homemade cleaning recipes for various surfaces throughout the house, whether it’s kitchen or bathroom, two areas in the house that require constant special attention when it comes to keeping them clean.
PILLOW WASHING TIPS: Stop the washing cycle half way to turn the pillows over. Rinse twice to get out all the cleaner inside to avoid skin allergies after wash.
