Unknown Benefits of Turmeric

The active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin. Turmeric is used for over 2500 years in India, primarily as a colorant. The medicinal properties of this spice have been revealed slowly throughout the centuries.

Known for its anti-inflammatory properties, recent studies have shown that turmeric is a natural wonder, its benefits treating many diseases, from cancer to Alzheimer’s.

Turmeric soothes heartburn. According to a study from 1989, turmeric supplements have been shown to be more effective in soothing the heartburn and indigestion symptoms than placebo. An explanation for this could be related with the power of this plant to fight against inflammation.

Keep Diabetes Away. It was found that people predisposed to diabetes can delay onset of disease if they consume turmeric, says a study in 2012. For the nine months, research participants were given either curcumin supplements or placebo capsules. Only 16% of those taking placebo reached Type 2 diabetics, while none of the participants who took curcumin developed the disease. The explanation relies on anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of this component of turmeric.

Fight against cancer. Studies and researches on animals have shown promising results related to the anticancer effects of curcumin. It seems that this component interferes with the development of the diseased cells in the body.

Another compound of turmeric protects the brain. Turmeric hasn’t been studied as well as curcumin, but seems to play a very important role in maintaining the health of the body. According to study on animals, turmeron repairs the stem cells of the brain. These cells are involved in the recovery from neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease. This means that turmeron could be a cure for these diseases. Also, a new study suggests that the memory of people suffering from Alzheimer can be improved by curcumin.
