How to Properly Clean Your Makeup Brushes

Cleaning the makeup brushes is very important in your daily beauty routine. A loaded brush can ruin your makeup and may favor pimples, due to the accumulation of impurities and bacteria. To avoid this unpleasant situation, it is advisable to clean the brushes before using them again. It’s best to wash them at least once a week.

Here are some simple tips that helps you to prolong the life of your brushes.

Wash your makeup brushes using vinegar

Due to its acidity, vinegar removes bacteria. Mix in a bowl 1-2 teaspoons of vinegar with double the amount of water and insert the brushes into this solution. Remove them after 5 minutes, rinse well with warm water and leave to dry in a horizontal position.

Use a homemade cleaning solution

When it comes to homemade cleaning solutions for makeup brushes, I recommend two different solutions that are hightly effective.

  1. For the first solution you’ll need the following ingredients:

100 ml of baby shampoo

6 drops of tea tree oil

4 drops of essential lavender oil

a 100 ml bottle for the storage of the homemade solution

Tea tree oil acts as a disinfectant, reduces bacteria and has anti-fungal and anti-viral properties.

Lavender oil soothes, disinfects, reduces bacteria and provides a relaxing fragrance.

Use the resulting solution to clean your brushes, then rinse them thoroughly with clean water.

Let the brushes dry upside down, because you don’t want to damage the handles.

TIP: To mantain the brushes upside down, use the remaining cartons of the toilet paper or of the kitchen paper towels.

  1. Another way to clean makeup brushes is the combination of olive oil and liquid dish detergent.

You need the following materials:

  • a deep white ceramic plate
  • 2 parts of liquid dish detergent
  • 5 parts of olive oil

How clean the brushes

Pour into the plate the dish detergent and then add over it the olive oil. Take each brush and move it through the oil solution using circular motions. When the brush is well soaked in detergent and oil, you’ll notice that every trace of makeup was cleaned. Rinse the brush with hot running water until the water dripping from it stays clean. Then dab the wet brush with a paper towel and let it dry on a cotton towel overnight. The dish detergent degreases and removes the colored pigments and the olive oil protects the hairs and keeps them as fine as ever.
